Swooning over Scarlett in Venice

Hollywood star Scarlett Johansson left hearts pounding in Venice after her appearance to promote her latest film “Under the Skin.”  In the film,  Johansson plays a sexy alien on a road-trip through Scotland seducing and destroying  men along her route. Over the course of her journey she begins to gain some sensitivity and human emotions.

In the film Johansson has dark hair and frequently adjusts her lipstick before asking men for directions and then inviting them for a ride in her truck.  She moves sensually but lacks any human sensitivity as she destroys a series of men before slowly coming to a vague understanding of a female identity.

In my opinion the movie was dreadful, and I would have left if I hadn’t been there for work.  A colleague told me the only reason he stayed in the screening was “to see Scarlett naked.”

But Venice is about more than just the films.  Fans waited out in the heat for hours to see her arrive in a water taxi.

Scarlett stopped and signed some autographs for some teenage boys who were almost swooning at her feet. The photographers and cameramen I was working with were not far behind.

When I dared to criticize Scarlett, rather cattily, as she made her way down the red carpet suggesting that her hair was messy and she was looking a bit chunky, my colleague Adam turned to me, his face flushed, and said, “she has gorgeous curves.”

That shut me up.  I guess I’m just jealous.

  1. So, so funny Trisha. She does have gorgeous curves, no doubt about that. This movie may be dreadful, but I loved her in some of the Woody Allen movies, like “Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona” and “Match Point.” But I agree with you about the messy hair. Maybe she’s going for that “rumpled, just-fell-out=of-bed look” to go with the rest of her sexy persona.

    1. Hi Linda, I agree she has been great in a lot of other films–I also really liked her in “Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona” and plenty of stars are in films that flop. She definitely has a star quality about her and I think this director got too distracted by her good looks and spent too much of the time focusing on her and forgot about creating any decent plot or story line. I saw that in another film that I was covering here yesterday by an important Israeli film director Amos Gitai. He presented a film called “Ana Arabia” which had a very interesting idea behind it, but the whole film seemed just one long tedious shot of the stunningly beautiful Israeli actress Yuval Scharf. I guess becoming smitten with their leading ladies is a risk for film directors!

    1. Isn’t that funny. I was being such a jealous little nit-picker. I just got back to Rome and the city seems to be plastered with gorgeous Dolce and Gabbana ads with Scarlett looking pretty perfect. I am just going to have to live with this jealousy!

  2. Uh oh, I am the odd woman out here. I saw the shot of her hair and said to myself “that’s exactly how I want my hair to look.” Must be the Californian in me.

    1. Perhaps it is the Californian in you, or perhaps you are just less jealous than I am. I think Scarlett could look fabulous pretty much whatever she does… I got the impression that she has an incredible amount or self-confidence, that she feels very good about herself, and that she doesn’t worry about her looks. Sadly, Sandra Bullock, who is a fantastic actress, and who is my age, seemed a tad bit more insecure, less comfortable in her skin. I have noticed the same thing while covering Nicole Kidman at the Rome Film Festival once. Meryl Streep, however, was absolutely confident, self-assured and stunningly beautiful.
