Sometimes a photo is worth a blog post by itself. This photo of Pope Francis as Super Pope was taken by my friend, AP Photographer Gregorio Borgia. It is right down the street from the Vatican on the corner of Borgo Pio, a neighborhood of old houses and tiny cobblestone streets. The graffiti was done by Italian street artist Maupal. I am not sure he is “faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive, and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound,” but like Superman, perhaps Pope Francis is using the power he has in a “never-ending battle for truth and justice.” I love the briefcase with “valores” or values written on the side and the red and blue scarf of his favorite football (soccer) team (San Lorenzo of Buenos Aires, Argentina) slipping out.

We love you, “Super Papa”!!! Hope the authorities don’t paint over this graffiti any time soon. I’ll be there in August and will make a point to check out this work of art. Maybe I’ll even stop by the Roma AP office to meet you, Trisha… Italia’s “Super Mamma” !
You are not going to believe this — the Italian city authorities painted over it yesterday. The crumbs!!! With all the ugly — not to mention fascist, racist graffiti in this city, why did they have to remove something so positive and fun. I hope some new ones start popping up around Rome. Yes, do come meet me when you are in Rome in August. The AP office is right near Piazza Venezia.
